Known as a bedroom community within the City of San Diego it lies just north of MiraMar Marine Air Station to the West of Interstate 15 and East of Interstate 805.
Many of the homes in Mira Mesa were built in the 1970´s consisting of smaller California ranch type homes with 2-3 bedrooms. Since that era the homes have become a bit larger adding additional architectural features. They have also gone from 1 and 2 car garages to the larger 3 car garage.
The city is pretty-much built around a large circle. There are stores, movies, restaurants, library, park and schools built around this circle. Downtown commute is approximately 20 miles. During the normal rush-times the main streets filter in and off of the freeways causing some slowing and congestion. Just about anything you´d need in shopping can be found within just a few miles either direction.
Rancho Penasquitos is just to the north of Mira Mesa and Scripps Ranch is to the East. With the most recent building of new homes, the two towns have grown and are just about touching each other.
Mira Mesa has been predominately a middle-class area with many activities catering toward the kids such as baseball, gymnastics, swimming and soccer. MiraMar Community College is located here offering many choices of classes from dancing to philosophy, computers to exercise, child enrichment and swimming.
